Surface Mount Devices, or SMDs, are electronic components designed to be directly installed into a surface mount circuit board. Because SMD components do not need leads to pass through PCB holes like traditional through-hole components do, they are ideal for modern, tiny electronic systems. Let ELEPCB introduce SMD components in detail right away.
Distinction Between SMD and SMT
SMD and SMT (Surface Mount Technology) are interchangeably used most of the time, though they refer to different things. SMD is the physical electrical device, whereas SMT is the technique employed to solder such devices to a surface-mount printed circuit board. SMD and SMT, combined, have revolutionized electronics manufacturing by enabling one to make smaller, more efficient devices.

What is the Usage of SMD Components?
SMT-based SMD components enable high-density PCB assembly via automation, reducing parasitic effects and improving electrical performance. They replace through-hole leads, enabling miniaturization in consumer electronics, IoT, and aerospace.
| Parameter | SMT | THT |
| Assembly | Components reduced by 60%-80% (IPC-2221B standard) | Limited by lead spacing |
| Cost | 30% cost reduction (no drilling required) | Higher drilling/insertion costs |
| High-Frequency Performance | Parasitic inductance <0.1nH (JEDEC JESD22-A114 test standard) | Susceptible to signal degradation |
This innovation drives modern-day electronics miniaturization (like smd chips):
Smartphone motherboards currently contain >95% SMD components, with Apple A15 Bionic embracing 01005 packages. Medical technology like Medtronic pacemakers necessitate embracing 0201 packages due to implantable device constraints.
2 Main Types of Surface Mount Device Package
| Package Code | Metric Size (mm) | Imperial Size (inch) |

| 603 | 1.6×0.8 | 0.063×0.031 |
| 805 | 2.0×1.25 | 0.079×0.049 |

How to Design
Surface Mount Circuit Board?
Step 1:
Component Spacing Control
To avoid solder short circuits and increase reliability, especially in micro-SMD board layouts, precise control of component spacing needs to be ensured.
- Spacing for 0402 Packages: Adjacent components must maintain a minimum spacing of ≥0.15mm (IPC-7351B standard) to prevent solder bridging during stencil printing and reflow.
- Special Layout for 0201 Packages: To reduce electromagnetic interference and mechanical stress, adopt a “sandwich-style layout” (staggered arrangement on upper and lower layers), ensuring vertical misalignment between adjacent components.
Step 2:
Pad Optimization Design
Pad design directly impacts soldering quality and component stability, requiring optimization based on package dimensions and process requirements.
- Pad Length Extension: Pad length should extend 0.2mm beyond the component lead (e.g., 0402 resistor pad size 0.8×0.4mm) to ensure sufficient soldering area and prevent tombstoning.
- Solder Mask Opening Tolerance: Solder mask openings must be controlled within ±0.02mm to avoid insufficient or excessive exposure of pads, which may affect soldering yield.
Step 3:
Signal Integrity Co-design
For power delivery networks and high-speed designs, layout optimizations must ensure electrical performance.
High-Speed Signal Routing Rules
Impedance Control: Differential pair impedance must be 100Ω±10% (refer IPC-2141A standard), achieved by trace width variation and dielectric thickness variation.
Serpentine Routing Spacing: For crosstalk minimization, serpentine trace spacing should be ≥3× trace width, with rounded corners being preferable to reduce reflections.
Power Integrity Design
Decoupling Capacitor Placement: Place 10μF+0.1μF capacitor pairs near BGA package corners (spacing ≤5mm) to suppress high-frequency noise and reduce power impedance.
Power Plane Splitting: Avoid routing sensitive signals over split planes to prevent signal degradation caused by discontinuous reference planes.
Step 4:
SMD File Setup & Assembly Co-design
Gerber File Generation Standards
Standardized Gerber file definitions are very important for consistency in PCB fabrication and SMT processes.
Table 5: SMD File Standard
| Type | Suffix | Content |
| Top Layer | .GTL | Trace/Pad/Silkscreen |
| Stencil Layer | .GTS | SMD Pad Opening |
| Drill File | .DRL | Through-hole/Blind & Buried Via Coordinates |
Layer Definition Standards:
Top Layer (.GTL): Includes traces, pads, and silkscreen markings (e.g., component designators and polarity symbols).
Stencil Layer (.GTS): Contains only SMD pad openings for solder paste application (prevents contamination in non-soldering areas).
Drill File (.DRL): Accurately defines through-hole, blind/buried via coordinates (unit: mm, ASCII format).
PCB Assembly BOM Co-design
For SMT mounting of industrial controller PCBs, proper mapping of design data and production files is the most important element to increase the throughput rate.
For example, with the industrial controller project, the systemic deviation of BOM coordinate files and Gerber coordinates (normal value ±0.1mm, meeting IPC-9850 placement precision standard) leads to frequent device offset problems, which are manifested as follows:
- QFP package chip pin and pad misalignment of 0.08mm (exceeding IPC-A-610 Class 2 standards)
- 0402 Capacitor Resistive Device LIBRARY defective rate as high as 1.2% (industry average 0.8%)
After the deployment of the next engineering optimization program, Coordinate synchronization system Adopt Altium Designer component manager (precision ±0.01mm), set up BOM-PCB coordinate auto mapping mechanism to achieve:
- Automatic device coordinate compensation algorithm
- Visual verification of polarity indicators (IPC-7351B)
DFM Validation Process
Manufacturability validation via IPC-356A network table, with focus on testing for.
- Component polarity marking consistency (head-on to reverse connection risk of LED/Diode)
- Package compatibility verification (to ensure QFN pad and stencil opening compatibility)
- Safe pitch verification (meets IPC-2221A 0.15mm minimum pitch requirement)
Implementation Effect
- Placement accuracy from ±0.1mm to ±0.03mm (up to CPK≥1.67 process capability)
- Component alignment pass rate improved by 35% (from 82% to 110.7%)
- First article by rate enhanced from 92% to 98.5% (better than IPC-7912A through rate standard)
- Enhanced single lot production cycle time by 12 hours (reduced rework labor by 58%)

SMD Soldering Process and Quality Control
Soldering Quality Standards
Adherence to IPC-A-610 Class 3 standards (for high-reliability electronics) ensures mechanical strength and long-term stability of solder joints.
- Solder Joint Height: Must be 25%~50% of component lead height (prevents cold joints or excessive collapse).
- Wetting Angle: ≤45° (ensures full coverage of the lead-pad interface).
Fine-Pitch Device Soldering
For 0.3mm pitch QFN packages, high-precision processes are critical to prevent bridging and voids:
- Stencil Design: 80μm thickness (laser-cut + nano-coating), 1:1 aperture-to-pad ratio (minimizes solder paste smearing).
- Solder Paste: SAC305 lead-free paste (Type 4, 20-38μm particle size) balances flowability and fine-pitch printing.
- Post-Placement Inspection: 3D SPI (Solder Paste Inspection) verifies thickness and coverage (±10% tolerance).
Nitrogen Reflow Soldering Parameters
Nitrogen atmosphere minimizes oxidation and enhances solder wettability, requiring precise multi-stage control.
Table 6: Multi-stage Control of Nitrogen Atmosphere
| Stage | Temp. (°C) | Time (s) | O₂ Level (ppm) |
| Preheat | 150-180 | 60-90 | <1000 |
| Reflow | 240-250 | 60-80 | <50 |
| Key Note: Peak reflow temperature must not exceed component limits (e.g., 260℃ for plastic ICs). | |||
