PCB Cost Drivers
First of all, let’s get a comprehensive understanding of the composition of PCB price. The proportion of direct material cost in the cost composition of PCB usually reaches about 60%, while the proportion of direct labour cost usually reaches about 15%. Manufacturing costs usually account for about 25%.
Pre-manufacturing: Design and Material Selection
Select Suitable Materials to Reduce Cost
Substrate
FR-4 is the most common substrate, but the high-frequency board (Rogers 4350B) is more expensive. The cost of double-sided boards is more than fifty per cent of total PCB costs. The main circuit board cost factors are:
- TG value: The TG170 will be more expensive than the TG130 by 8-10%, and the TG150 will be more expensive than the TG130 by 3-5%.
- Board thickness: 1.6 mm is conventional thickness. Every change of 0.4 mm will lead to cost fluctuations for each square metre.
- Utilisation: Generally speaking, the utilisation rate of regular double-sided boards should be ≥80%, and that of multilayer boards ≥75%. Below these rates, the cost will rise.
- Parameter performance: Special materials, especially high frequency and high speed (e.g. Rogers, Isola, Teflon).
| Frequency | Recommend Material |
| ≤1 GHz | FR4 |
| 1~5 GHz | I-speed |
| RF Signals | Special RF Materials |
Optimize Design to Reduce Compelxity
- Layer control: The more layers the PCB has, the more expensive it is. Four-layer boards are prioritised as they cost 40% less than six-layer boards. If you want to spend less money on manufacturing, try to reduce the layers of your PCB. At the same time, an odd number of layers should be avoided, as although the cost of raw materials for odd-layer PCBs is lower than for even-layer PCBs, the processing cost is 15% higher. Odd-layer PCBs are also prone to warping problems, resulting in extra PCB repair costs.
- Panelization: The PCB cost per square inch is calculated in different ways, depending on the processes and requirements involved. To save board material, the shape and gaps of circuit boards should be maximised, which is called panelization. The custom PCB cost can be reduced significantly by board panelization, which can reduce waste and manufacturing costs. Additionally, the panelization gaps are limited to 1.6mm for its V-cut lowest cost spacing.
While-manufacturing: Technology and Equipment Control
Controlling Process Accuracy to Reduce Processing Costs
- Wire width/space:The conventional process is 0.1 mm+, while accurate circuits of 0.05 mm require high-end manufacturing equipment (LDI equipment), which increases the cost.
- The number and diameter of vias: The price increases when the holes are less than 0.3 mm. The price also increases with the number of holes, as well as with special holes such as half-holes and PTH holes(6.0 mm+).

Right-Sizing Quality Control
- Unified international IPC standards: IPC-6012 Class 3 standards are 10–20% more expensive than regular Class 2 standards (testing ratio increased by 100%)
- Automotive standards (TS16949 certified)
- Military standards (military certification required)
- Aerospace standards (AS9001 certified)

China vs. US PCB Suppliers: Cost Comparison
| Category | Chinese Suppliers | U.S. Suppliers |
| Cost Competitiveness | ✅ Lower labor costs, economies of scale reduce unit price ✅ Government subsidies (tax breaks, export rebates) | ❌ High labor costs (3-5× China) |
| Supply Chain Integrity | ✅ Localized supply chain (materials, equipment, chemicals) ✅ Industrial clusters | ❌ Key materials (e.g., high-end CCL) depend on imports ❌ Fragmented supply chain, lower efficiency |
| Production Scale | ✅ Global capacity share >50% ✅ Top players: >1M sqm/month | ❌ Focused on niche/high-end markets, limited small-batch capacity |

Conclusion
Optimizing PCB costs requires a holistic approach across design, manufacturing, and supply chain. Implement these 3 proven strategies to slash expenses while maintaining reliability:
Design Smart – Minimize layers (4L preferred), optimize panelization, standardize materials (FR4 first)
Process Control – Choose economical finishes (OSP), avoid ultra-fine features (<0.05mm)
Supply Chain Synergy – Leverage volume discounts via long-term partnerships, adopt JIT inventory
