What Is PCB Delamination? Causes and Prevention

Tartalomjegyzék

Ipari PCB-k endure harsh conditions that can slowly damage their internal structure. Have you ever wondered what happens when heat, humidity, vibration, and chemicals affect a PCB over time?
PCB delamination is a common reliability concern for nyomtatott áramköri lapok (PCB) that are exposed to demanding industrial environments. When the layers that make up a PCB begin to separate, the board becomes more vulnerable to cracks, moisture penetration, electrical failures and other forms of damage.
This article explains what PCB delamination is, what causes it, its impact on industrial electronics, and how to prevent and detect it. Grasping these factors can empower manufacturers to select suitable materials, refine PCB tervezés and manufacturing processes, and develop more robust boards for challenging applications.

What is PCB Delamination?

PCB delamination is defined as the splitting of bonded layers in printed circuit boards, which might involve laminált, resin, réz, or some other reinforcement material. The delamination can result from several factors, such as a high degree of heating, humidity after production, mechanical damage, or certain errors made during production. PCB delamination weakens printed circuit boards and can raise issues like cracks, electrical rövidnadrág, penetration of moisture into boards, and a decrease in the reliability of these devices.

What Causes PCB Delamination in Industrial PCBs?

Delamination of industrial PCBs is usually associated with a number of different factors instead of one defect. Some factors can contribute to the weakening of internal connections in PCBs, such as the type of materials used, moisture, thermal stresses, production technology, etc.

Industrial Environmental Factors

The operational environment can provide various damaging influences on industrial PCBs. A combination of heat, humidity, vibration, chemical exposure, and the long-term use of PCBs can weaken the alkatrészek and lead to delamination of PCBs as well as lower their reliability over time. Here’s the table below:
Környezetvédelmi factor
Effect on PCB
Repeated heating and cooling create thermal stresses that can weaken layer interfaces.
Humidity
Moisture can enter the laminate, weaken bonding, and increase the risk of internal damage.
Rezgés
Continuous mechanical vibration can accelerate cracks and separation between bonded layers.
Chemicals
Oils, solvents, and corrosive substances can degrade materials and protective surfaces.
Continuous operation
Long operating periods increase cumulative thermal, mechanical, and environmental stress.

Material Selection Issues

If ineffective lamination is used, it may have insufficient thermal resistance, moisture resistance or bonding strength for industrial operations. The lamination may experience problems such as delamination due to inappropriate transition temperature or thermal conduction coefficient, especially in applications subject to continuous temperature changes.

Moisture and Humidity

PCB laminate can absorb moisture, which can gather at the interface of materials. When heated, absorbed moisture can expand, creating internal pressure. Consequently, constant high humidity influences the durability of bonding and causes peeling off and other problems.

Thermal Stress and Temperature Cycling

Különböző materials of PCB can expand and contract at different rates under the influence of temperature changes. The result of such thermal cycling is mechanical tension along the area of the interface, which can lead to the generation of cracks or peeling off.

PCB Manufacturing Defects

Improper lamination pressure, temperature, curing or bonding leads to weak interfaces, voids, and other manufacturing defects inside the PCB. All the weaknesses might not be able to be distinguished initially but can become places of a PCB meghibásodása subjected to thermal or mechanical stresses.

How Does PCB Delamination Affect Industrial Electronics?

Delamination is an underlying problem in PCBs that can cause both structural and electrical failures. The damage makes troubleshooting the failure both challenging and costly.

Electrical Failures

Delamination may disrupt the electrical paths of the PCB and cause damage to the conductors, vias, and interfaces. If the delamination progressively escalates, it may result in crack formation and separation, and lead to intermittent connections and insulation problems.

Csökkentett PCB Megbízhatóság

Separation of internal layers reduces the overall physical strength of the PCB, making it more susceptible to damage resulting from various environmental factors. Initially, the PCB may continue performing normally, but it will gradually worsen from external influences such as temperature, humidity, vibration, and mechanical stresses.

Equipment Downtime

Delamination can lead to unexpected inspection, javítás, or replacement of industrial equipment following intermittent or sudden failures of PCBs. In manufacturing environments, such failures can create downtime and higher maintenance costs, particularly when the damaged area is difficult to find.

Reduced Service Life

Repeated applications of thermal, mechanical, and environmental stresses can accelerate the growth of delamination that has already occurred. As the damaged area grows, the reliability of the PCB becomes compromised, and its life becomes significantly shorter.

Real-World Examples of PCB Delamination

Research has shown that attributes from repeated thermal and mechanical stress can contribute to the process of delamination in PCBs and also demonstrate how material selection and manufacturing processes can affect reliability in challenging operating conditions.

Thermal Cycling of PCB-to-Aluminium Attachments

PCB-szerelvények attached to aluminium substrates using different types of thermal-interface adhesives were examined by Maddox et al. The boards were thermally cycled between -40°C and 125°C for multiple cycles. Delaminations were noticed on 17 out of 35 spots that used one type of adhesive within 1,000 cycles, while no delaminations were seen with another PSA adhesive.

Delamination During Repeated Temperature Exposure

Janeczek et al. investigated PCBs that contained electronic parts incorporated in the structure while they went through temperature cycling ranging from -40°C to +105°C. After 250 and 500 temperature cycles, epoxy resin specimens exhibited increasing levels of cracks and delamination, while laminated samples were shown to be more resistant to thermal conditions. Furthermore, the research indicates that damage experienced by the epoxy layer may affect solder joint quality due to the critical role of proper PCB design in temperature-variable environments.

How to Prevent PCB Delamination

To avoid delamination processes, it is necessary to control the processes of selecting materials, thermal management, manufacturing, and assembling of PCBs.

Select Suitable PCB Anyagok

The selected lamination process type determines the appropriate laminates based on expected temperature, humidity, mechanical stress, and the operation. Knowing the properties of materials gives better chances to cope with difficult working environments.

Improve Thermal Management

Megfelelő hőelvezetés minimises excess temperatures and thermal gradients on conductors. Thermal vias, heat sinks, and suitable board materials reduce the warming-up effects.

Vezérlés PCB Gyártási folyamatok

Lamination temperatures, lamination pressures, and moisture levels should be closely monitored. Normal operating practices prevent voids and weak interconnections and bonding.

Use Proper PCB Assembly Techniques

Using soldering techniques prevents overheating of boards. The PCB design and assembly should be organised with care to ensure a proper assembly.

How to Detect and Test PCB Delamination

With early inspection, initial defects can be determined before they result in failures in the field operation. The combination of inspection techniques with environmental testing gives a better evaluation of PCB strength that includes:

Visual and Microscopic Inspection

Visual and microscopic inspection can detect surface cracks, discolouration, warping, blisters, and other obvious signs of damage to the PCBs. A cross-section view could provide additional information about internal layers or interfaces of the materials used.

X-Ray Ellenőrzés

Röntgenellenőrzés represents a non-intrusive technique allowing for evaluation of defects in PCB components’ structure which may be invisible from the outside. This technique is essential for determining possible defects before going with destructive testing.

Thermal Cycling Testing

Thermal cycling refers to the process of subjecting boards to changes of temperature under controlled conditions so that thermal stresses occurring in practice can be mimicked. Therefore, from the results of monitoring performed during and after cycles, it is possible to unveil the progressive damage processes taking place in the PCB.

Environmental Testing

Humidity, temperature, and vibrations combined in environmental testing help simulate a harsh manufacturing environment. These tests allow diagnosing whether the PCB materials and design will withstand the environmental conditions and will not develop significant reliability problems.

PCB Delamination Prevention Best Practices

Appropriate practices minimise the chances of PCB delaminating and could help find weaknesses before they lead to expensive failures.
  • The tests for reliability should mimic the expected temperature and humidity conditions, and vibrations during the actual functioning of the equipment.
  • A good quality control system would monitor the PCB materials, parameters of the production process, methods of moisture handling, and processes of lamination and assembly.
  • Suppliers should be chosen based on the history of their products, production capabilities, quality control systems and reliability record.
  • Analysis of failures must determine the causes of delamination and suggest methods which can eliminate this problem in the future.

Következtetések

PCB delamination can have a significant impact on the reliability and service life of industrial electronics, particularly when they are subjected to repeated thermal cycling, humidity, vibration and other challenging operating conditions. Using suitable materials, controlling the manufacturing process and carrying out proper inspections and reliability tests can reduce the risk of delamination and improve long-term PCB performance.

GYIK

A1: The conditions of the industrial setting usually require higher and more prolonged exposure to heat, humidity, vibrations, chemicals, and thermal cycles. Thus, leading to progressive weakening of the layers at the junctions between them and have higher chances of delamination becoming a visible and problematic issue over time.

A2: Industrial machinery often undergoes prolonged exposure to multiple stresses such as high temperatures, vibrations, humidity, and mechanical loads, which makes it easier for PCB delamination to occur. Although consumer electronics also undergo these stresses, industrial systems introduce combinations of environmental stresses continuously, speeding up material deterioration.
A3: If the delamination is slight, the PCB may continue working for some time, provided that the electrical connections remain intact. Nevertheless, it must be noted that delamination makes a PCB weaker and may increase with the consistent operation and usage of the PCB, thus causing eventual malfunctioning of the system.
A4: Delamination hints can be in the form of white patches, discolouration, swelling, formation of bubbles, or visible detachment. Delamination inside the PCB may not be obvious; for assurance of delamination, microscopic, cross-sectional, and X-ray examinations which can be necessary at times.
