What is PCB Hard Disk?
A Hard Drive Printed Circuit Board is an important part or component that controls/ governs the electronic functions of a hard disk drive (HDD). A hard disk PCB board manages power supply, data transfer, and firmware communication for smooth interaction between the HDD and the computer.
The hard drive circuit board includes several chipsets such as the main microcontroller unit (MCU), motor controller, RAM, and ROM chips, storing the firmware for the operation of the HDD.
| Function | Specific Description |
| Power Management | Built-in a high efficiency voltage conversion module that converts a 12V input into 5V/3.3V outputs to supply power for motors and chips. |
| Circuit Protection | Adopt the combination of NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient Thermistor) and TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression Diode) to prevent surge and over voltage damage. |
| Data Transmission | The high speed interface supports 6.25Gbps signal transmission. Data integrity is ensured through precise impedance control of 80Ω and time skew compensation of less than 10ps. |
| Physical Connection | Adapt to the SATA protocol and use signal enhancement techniques to compensate for the signal attenuation of the circuit board. |
| Material Selection | Adopt a high-frequency and low – loss substrate and gold-plating process. The contact resistance is less than 0.05Ω after 100 mating cycles to improve long term mating stability. |
HDD PCB Components
A hard disk PCB board consists of various crucial components, listed below are the most significant components of a PCB HDD:
Hard Drive Controller (MCU)
The hard drive controller is the central part of the HDD PCB. It processes all input/output data, read/write heads, caching, and error correction.
- Typical operating frequency: operating frequency between 300-500MHz, and this chip may need to be equipped with a four-layer board power plane to ensure its normal operation.
- BGA solder ball: BGA solder ball diameter of 0.45mm, the pitch is 0.8mm. In the X-ray inspection, for the detection of false soldering accuracy, it is required to be less than or equal to 5μm, which is to ensure the quality of welding.
Motor Driver IC
Motor controller is a chip regulates the spindle motor that spins the platters at high speed (e.g., 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM). It ensures reliable operation and regulates the speed as per the requirements of the HDD.
Current driving capability:
- Having the capability to supply three-phase 1.5A RMS drive current, and the copper foil of the PCB should be capable of carrying a current of greater than or equal to 3A/mm², that is to ensure that the motor driver chip is supplied with sufficient current supply in order to drive the motor on the hard disk for regular operation.
Thermal Resistance Parameters:
- The thermal resistance parameter θJA = 35°C/W is the chip junction to ambient thermal resistance. It also requires the size of the thermal pads on the PCB to be ≥ 6mm², as the motor driver chip will generate heat in the process of working, and sufficient thermal pads will radiate the heat away from the chip, preventing the chip from getting damaged by overheating.
ROM Chip (Firmware Storage)
The HDD firmware is stored in ROM chip. It is essential for normal operation of the hard drive. If the firmware is corrupted or incompatible then the HDD could not work properly even though a working PCB is replaced.
- SPI Flash Capacity: The SPI Flash capacity is 4Mb-16Mb with a normal page write time of 1.5ms, which are specifications of the ROM chip, such as data storage capacity and writing speed.
- Data Retention Cycle: Data can be retained for 20 years at 85°C ambient temperature. And you must avoid soldering temperatures over 260°C in order not to destroy ROM chips.
RAM Chip
The RAM chip facilitates temporary storage for the HDD, enabling quicker access and processing of data.
Power Management Circuit
This section of the hard disk PCB manages voltage and powers the various HDD components. It protects from power spikes and ensures a stable power supply.
Interface Connector (SATA or IDE)
This section of the hard drive PCB facilitates data communication between the hard drive and the computer via SATA or older IDE interfaces.
Common Problems with Hard Drive PCBs
Power Surge Damage
Power surges may suddenly fry the power management chip in the HDD PCB and result in drive failure.
Firmware Corruption
A hard drive may fail to function or display the errors when the firmware in the PCB chipset is corrupted.
Burnt Components
Overheating due to heat overloads or electrical shorts can also destroy certain chip HDD components, rendering the HDD unusable.
Solder Joint or Connector Failure
Hard drive circuit board connectors and solder joints deteriorate with age, causing periodic connection failure.
How to Repair PCB Hard Disk Failures?
Step 1 Hot Air Gun Disassembly Process
Temperature profile control
- Preheat Zone: The temperature rises gradually from 150°C to 180°C in this zone, and the rate of temperature rise gradient should not be greater than 3°C/s. This is to preheat for the subsequent more drastic temperature changes, so that the components on the PCB can gradually acclimatize to the temperature change, in order to avoid damage due to sudden high temperature.
- Reflow zone: Here the temperature is at its maximum, 235-245°C, and it holds this level for 40-60 s. In high-temperature conditions, disassembling some parts of the PCB can be done.
Nozzle Selection:
This dictates the utilization of a 8mm diameter round nozzle and an air speed of 1.5m/s. The correct nozzle and air speed will provide an application of the heat from the hot air gun to the precise area to be dismantled or adjusted.
| Stage | Temperature | Duration | Ramp Rate |
| Preheat | 150°C→180°C | 90s | 2°C/s |
| Soak | 180°C→210°C | 60s | 0.5°C/s |
| Reflow | 210°C→245°C | 40s | 3°C/s |
| Cooling | 245°C→150°C | 80s | -4°C/s |
Step 2 Chip Level Data Exchange
SPI Flash Pin Definition Reversal
- Signal Capture: Capture CS# (chip select signal), CLK (clock signal), DI/DO (data input/output signals) by using a logic analyzer to record the changes and data of these signals at a sampling rate of no less than 100MHz.
- Pin Voltage Threshold Backpropagation: For the WP# (write-protect signal) and HOLD# (hold signal) pins, backpropagate their voltage thresholds. Normally, the low level voltage VIL is 0.3 times of the supply voltage VDD and the high level voltage VIH is 0.7 times of the supply voltage VDD.
Bad Block Handling:
Once encountering a bad block in the chip, vendor-specific software such as PC-3000 (as indicated in the actual scenario) would be used to remap the spare sector. That is to shift the data which was originally found in the bad block to the spare, healthy sector, such that the chip may store and read data as per normal.
Step 3 Cross-board Compatibility Verification
Firmware Adaptation
- Module fine-tuning: Fine-tune the Adaptive Parameters module, which includes the Head Map and Zone Table.
- CRC32 checksum: CRC32 checksum is calculated within the SA region (may be a special storage location) and uses polynomial 0x04C11DB7. CRC32 is a cyclic redundancy check digit and used to check if there is an error in data while storing or transmitting.
Signal Integrity Test:
A loopback test of the preamplifier is performed, subject to the condition that it should have a read amplitude of not less than 80mVpp when operating at a write current of 20mA. This is in order to verify the signal purity passing through the preamplifier section of the PCB hard disk and ensure that the signal is not being over-attenuated or over-distorted in transmission.
How to Replace Hard Drive with SSD?
1. Replacing with the Exact Model PCB
All HDD PCB’s are made specifically according to the hard drive model.
When you are replacing a hard disk PCB board, you will need to provide an exact match model number, firmware version, and manufacturer description.
2. Transferring the ROM Chip
Most modern hard disks contain special firmware data in the form of a ROM chip. When you swap a PCB in a hard disk, it may be necessary to duplicate this chip from the old PCB to the new PCB for the replacement to be useful.
